2012 Cycling and Weight Loss Goals

I’m not sure why I’ve put this post off but I have. I’ve actually been thinking about and planning my goals for 2012 for several weeks now but never got around to actually writing a post. Maybe it was the 10-12 hour days I’ve been working that has something to do with it. Maybe I was just lazy. My wife would say I was procrastinating. She knows me very well.

Originally this post was going to be very detailed to show you the plan behind the goals but a moment of sanity hit me and I decided to split into two posts. This one where I tell you what my goals for 2012 are and another to show you my training plan for 2012. If you follow me on Twitter you might have caught a sneak peek I posted.

There will be no long explanations here trying to describe my reasoning behind these goals other than the fact that in order for me to lose this freaking weight I need to ride. In no particular order, here are my 2012 cycling and weight loss goals:

  1. Ride 5000 miles.
  2. Lose 30 pounds.
  3. Ride a century.
  4. Ride 500 miles in a month.

As I said earlier, I have a more detailed post coming that will explain my 2012 training plan so look for it soon.

How many of you have set your goals for the year? If you have what are they? If not, what are you waiting for?

Great to see you setting some nice goals for yourself and your cycling.  As always, if there’s anything I can do to help just let me know.  Make it Happen.

those are pretty good goals. I set a distane goal of 3000 miles this year. However, my main goal is to not let it get in the way of enjoying every ride.

Good goal Dave. You bring up a good point about not letting goals get in the way of enjoying the ride.

They look some some good strong goals. I’m thinking if you can get 5000 miles in a year then the 500 in a month will be a piece of cake. As for the century, it’s toast.

Thanks! I’m thinking the 500 should be a formality as well but we’ll see.

Good morning Everyone, first post here. I think those are some awesome goals to take on in 2012. In 2011 I lost 65 LBS. I archived this by setting near term or mini goals rather than end state goals. I am currently looking for a bike, researching them, and almost ready to throw some dead presidents down. That said, I dont have a goal…leading to failure before starting. So My goal for Feb 2012 is to buy a bike. Please pressure and hound me to buy a bike, yes you read that correctly. In the long run it will only benefit me.

Aaron, congrats on the weight loss last year. That’s awesome! What kind of bike you looking for or do you have your choices narrowed down?

Great goals.  Remember quality rides.  Listen to your body and becareful not to over train.  Some days will be good and some bad.  My goal is just to get back to the States and throw a leg over my Madone and start from ground zero again.
As far as the weight, try not to over compensate after a hard ride, because the body wants to keep what it is use to and the weight will leave.  I have done that and then scratched my head trying to figure it out.

I’m new to cycling so my goal for 2012 is to ride 2012 miles.

    My goals:

    Get new bike:
I love my CAAD9, it does not love me, just a tad big. Building out a nice Steel Frame bike, I just got done wrapping the bars and have a fitting appt Friday afternoon – Check

Stop working so much, ride more:  sort of check, but so much better than 2011

Lose 25 lbs by June 30: starting good, down 4 lbs this month.

Lose 50 lbs by Dec 31: in progress

Bad picture, night in a garage, but here you go.  Plan to take a better one tomorrow in the sunlight. I still need some new bottle cages, going to just get the old fashion silver cages to go along with the look of the frame.

      That looks great!

      Nice!  Components?

All Ultegra except Shifters and Crank, they are 105. Specialize Romin Expert saddle, Special Carbon Pro seat post, Specialized Stem. Jagwire cables and housing, Time ATAC XS pedals, Fizik bar tape, Velocity Fusion rims, Bonty Race Lite Hardcase tires.

The tires are super heavy, but just about bombproof. These have about 1K miles on them, no flats and they look brand new. My last set lasted about 3000 miles and I weighed at or above 300 while riding them and I had 1 flat.

The saddle is new, bought it Friday, and man is it comfy. I was riding the Specialized Avatar, but after 5 years it was time to replace it.

Everything except the Crank, FD and Seatpost came off the CAAD9.

          Thats a good build.

          That is a nice build.

        • Dtcklaw

Seems very well thought out.  May have to try the same some day.  What frame?  Can’t beat the feel of steel.  Great job.  Let me know how you like it on the road.

I just found your blob via Training4cyclists.com while doing some research before jumping in. I’m in my mid-40′s and weigh too much myself and the last time I tried cycling I think I did it all wrong…no special pants…too long a distance too many days in a row…much pain in the ‘sitting bones’. Reading your posts have inspired me give it another go but at a more reasonable rate. I still wish the seat was as comfortable as my recliner!

Chad, thanks for dropping a comment as well as the kind words. You listed several things that cause new riders to quit and I’m glad your going to give it another try. Let me know if you have any questions.
