Did You Know That May is National Bike Month?

Bike CommuteNot only is May National Bike Month but May 12-16 (this week) is designated as Bike-To-Work Week and Friday, May 16th, is designated as Bike-To-Work Day by the League of American Bicyclists. Did you know that? I didn’t until just recently. I’m surprised I hadn’t seen or heard anything about it. Not only have I not heard much about either of these two events on the Internet but I’ve heard absolutely zero about them in my hometown. I find that amazing. These types of events won’t gain popularity unless the word is spread.

A quick check of the Internet has yielded zero events in my hometown for National Bike Month, Bike-To-Work Week, or Bike-To-Work Day. That totally blows me away. I believe I may have a mission for next year.

Is your city putting on any official events related to National Bike Month? If so, please tell us about it by leaving a comment below.

  1. Wow, hard to believe there’s actually cities behind KC when it comes to bike awareness…I’d always assumed we were dead last :-) Well, it only takes a few to start raising bike awareness, Bryan. A few years ago I almost never saw bikers in KC, and now they’re becoming far more common. Bike Week here has grown from a few small events to over 60 in just a few years. Maybe you can find a few fellow cyclists in your area to start with, and with $4/gal gas it will probably grow from there :-) Good luck!

  2. People really have to make it happen; events like this don’t manifest themselves. If there’s a strong LAB presence in your community, it’s likely that they will spark the fire and rally the troops (so to speak).

Here in Kansas City, a small core of people got a committee together. I was on this committee. Those committee members brainstormed events and did much of the “troop rallying”, to get volunteers involved. That core and the volunteers had a lot of work ahead of them (myself included).

I’ll try to cover a little bit of what it takes in an upcoming post on commutebybike.com

  3. I am starting small by trying to be an example and inviting other co-workers who ride in their leisure time to try it as a commute. My goal is to ride for the majority of bike month & hopefully make a habit of it. People have seen me riding in and have started asking me about it. Hopefully some of them will join me.

  4. @Devin: Yes, with gas prices going nowhere but up I think starting community awareness of bicycling and national bike month would be easier. This year is a loss but maybe for next year.

  5. @Noah: I look forward to your post on what it takes. I may have to pick your brain. Thanks for the link.

  6. @JOdy: That’s a good way to start. Promote awareness by doing it. Good strategy.

  7. I already formed a team for the Snohomish County Bike to work challenge and got my t-shirt and everything.

I like your site, we seem to be on the same path.

  9. I be happy if I could get my facilities manager to let me park my bike I would use for commuting in doors. He told me to lock it up to a tree. Yea right. Even though the bike is not a $5000 carbon fiber dream bike, I still don’t want it left in the weather. I think I will have to contact corporate big wigs that are driving all the green stuff and see if they want to stand behind their words. I can easily park by bike next to my square dungeon.

  10. @Jaxgtr: Shoot, I’d park mine in my square dungeon. I can’t believe your manager wouldn’t be more accommodating.

  11. I’ve seen some freeway signs letting people know about bike to work day on friday.

Today is also LIVESTRONG day (http://www.livestrong.org)

  12. Well this guy isn’t known as a pinhead for nothing.

  13. @Arlyn: That’s cool about the signs. I had no idea that yesterday was Livestrong Day. You’d think I’m living in the dark ages. That makes two significant bike related events that I had no idea about and aren’t promoted at all in my city-that I know of. A check of the Livestrong site yielded no Livestrong Day events within 50 miles of my home. Sad. I’m really beginning to think that awareness in my city sucks. Jaxgtr, I’d like to know your opinion.

  14. @Jaxgtr: I know guys like that. I’ve even worked for a few too. I feel for you.
